Although it has not been announced anywhere, I am reliably told that as of a few weeks ago, adding someone to your ignore list will also stop you receiving private messages from them in the game.
Currently it is not clear if you still receive thief messages from players on your ignore list.

The ignore option allows you to specify a few usernames to ignore, you will then no longer see their chat lines and you will not receive any of their messages.

From what I have been told, even though it said that, it still wasn't blocking the messages. Was a bug for a little while that got fixed recently :)
